The Edge of the Spiral
In the summer of 2010 I was invited to work in Savignano, Italy on a series of photographs to be exhibited at the SI Festival 2010.
The landscape, as a natural phenomenon, does not exist. It is invented, becoming visible when we put a frame around nature. The sprawl of mid-size urban europe blurs the once well-defined regional boarders. My work in Savignano attempts to show the small sliver of space where urban/suburban/wilderness mix. Walk a spiral from the center of Savignano outwards. Try to mark the moment it stops being Savignano and starts being the industrial and agricultural belt. It is hard, if not impossible, to do. Just as the landscape is a construction of perception, so is the edge of the spiral.
